and climate Nova Scotia is about 55,000 square kilometers. Nowhere in Nova Scotia is more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the sea. The coast (especially the Atlantic Ocean) has many inlets that make terrific harbors. Nova Scotia where gets most of it's weather from weather systems that cross North American continents. The Ocean helps cool hot summers and warm cold winters. Winters bring snow, rain and ice storms. In autumn and the summer there are hurricanes and tropical storms. Population, languages and ethnic diversity There are 921,727 people in Nova Scotia. For ten thousand years this has been home to the Aboriginal people. The Mi'kmaq is Nova Scotia's culture. October is Mi'kmaq history month. . Mi'kmaq language is an Eastern Algonquian spoken by nearly 11,000 Mik'kmaq in Canada and the U.S.A. Interesting Facts One of the interesting facts is that Nova Scotia is in the shape of a lobster. The Provincial flower is the May Flower, the Provincial tree is the Red Spruce and the Provincial bird is the Osprey. John Cabot the explorer was the first to visit Nova Scotia in the year 1497.Nova Scotia is also the second smallest province in Canada after Prince Edward Island. Nova Scotia's motto is: One defends and the other conquers. History In Nova Scotia there has been an earth shaking disaster known as the Halifax Explosion in the year 1917 on December 6. There where about 2,000 people that died from the explosion. There are 27 provincial museums that explore the History of Nova Scotia. The Mi'kmaq presence can be traced as far back as 10,000 years. Capital City and other Major Cities Halifax, Nova Scotia's Capital, is the most important center in the Maritimes. They trade with Europe and West indies which helped it to grow. Now most people work at military bases, at container ports, or in Public service. Halifax has a huge international airport and four universities. In 1749, 2500 settlers came and they found the city. 1 thousand of them died during the first winter they had there. Natural Resources Nova Scotia is a province that is rich in minerals and natural resources. Great growing soil is very common in Nova scotia. The main products are: Dairy products, Eggs, Poultry, Fruits, Vegetables, Beef and pigs. Manufactured resources are: Fish products, Wood products, Food and beverages. Fish and Fishing can be found at the southern coasts of Nova Scotia. Tourism People travel to Nova scotia to go whale watching, many specialists see porpoises, seals and sea birds. People also travel to see museums, light houses, winery's, theatres, zoo's and much more. The best time to go to Nova Scotia is in the summer or fall. Soil and weather ideal producing grapes result character-rich and award winning wines. The Greatest Rock'n Roll bands on earth Halifax Commons, International jazz stars water front or symphony serving beer. Over one million visitors a year go to Nova Scotia.
