Did you know people have lived in Ontario for over 7,000 years. Some of the first people were the Huron, Iroquois, Neutral, Cree, and more. In 1611 Ontario was called upper Canada. Then in 1791 Henry Hudson sailed to the Hudson bay area and claimed it for Britain. Ottawa was called By town until 1857 when queen Victoria chose it as Canada's capital. Geography Ontario's water covers one sixth of the of the land area. There are many rocks and minerals. There are approximately 250,000 lakes in Ontario. Ontario is also home to the 5 great lakes. There are many forest areas were many types of animals are free to roam. The two physical regions are Hudson Bay Lowlands and the Canadian Shield. Climate Ontario has the hottest summers and the shortest mildest winters. In Ontario it is very humid and sticky in the summers even when it is raining or when its snowing. The record heat was 42.2 °C The record cold spike was −58.3 °C. Capital city and Major cities The capital city of Ontario is Toronto. This wonderful city used to be called York long, long ago. The city of Toronto is home to many businesses and cultures. This amazing city lies on the edge of lake Ontario which is a vary bountiful sight to see. Ontario is home to the capital of Canada and the famous parliament buildings. The capital of Canada is Ottawa. This city is home to road, rail, and waterway. This is home to many sights and places like the Ottawa river, the longest skating rink in the world! Natural Resources Did you know that Ontario is very rich in rock and minerals. In Ontario people have been harvesting crops and lots of fruits for years. People have been mining salt rock and minerals for century's. Their is lots of great hikes and rich forest ground such as soil and large trees. There is also lots of oil and natural gas. Population By 2000 the population in Ontario was already over 11.5 million. In 2028 Ontario's population is predicted to be over 15 million. Ontario is the most populous province in Canada. Ontario is also home to Toronto which is the most populous capital city. In Toronto the population is 7.5 million. languages In Ontario there is lots of people that speak French and lots of people that speak English. People speak English about 70% of the time and French the rest of the time. People that only speak English make up 86.3% of people. People that speak English and French make up 11.0%. Their is only 2.0% of people that speak nether French and English Ethnic diversity Ontario has many distinct native cultures and languages. The metis are distinct Aboriginal people with a unique history culture languages and territory. The metis nation is comprised of descendants of people born of relations between Indian women and European men. There are over 200,000 members of the Cree in Canada. The Cree people in Canada live north west of lake superior. Tourism In Ontario there is lots tourism attractions. Niagara falls Is one of the main tourist attractions in Ontario. There is also lots of amazing national parks. There is lots of people that love to go to some of the great Imax movies. There is great reviews on hikes that people have gone on. Finally one of the biggest attractions in Ontario is Canada's wonder land amusement park. More than 10,000 visitors come every month. Interesting Facts Before Canada was a country the area that is now known as Ontario had many different names. Did you know that Ontario's name came from the shimmering bodies of water in the province? The water of Niagara falls has been used as a energy source since the 1750's. If you wanted to drive across Ontario east west it would take 24 hours because it is the second largest province in Canada. The Ontario motto is ''loyal she began loyal she remains''. Learn more here
